Mildred Harriet Jones Carter of West Chester
Mildred Harriet Jones Carter, also known as “Mill”, of West Chester, returned home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 30, 2012, at the Kendal Barclay Friends Nursing Home of West Chester. She previously resided at Bellingham Retirement Community and was a lifelong resident of Chester County living in Kennett Square and West Chester. Mill was the widow of the late Harold C. “Grits” Carter who died on January 13, 1991 after they shared 48 years of marriage. Prior to 1991, Mill worked with her husband in their electrical contracting business as an officer of the company. Born in Kennett Square on July 23, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Townsend and Annie Mathews Jones. Mill was a graduate of Kennett Consolidated High School and a member of the class of 1943. She was a co-founder of the Carter-Miller-Johnson V.F.W. Post #8984 Ladies Auxiliary of Kennett Square. Mill was an active member of The Retired Women of Chester County, Club Charisma, Les Ameis Federated Club, the Neighbor’s Club, and the Red Hats Society of West Chester. Mill was a member of St. Agnes Church and volunteered in the Day Room. In addition, she volunteered at numerous community service organizations in Chester County, including Pocopson Home where she managed the snack bar, the West Chester Senior Center, the Kennett Square Senior Center, the West Chester Day Care Center, Bring and Buy Thrift Shop, and at Chester County Hospital as manager of the Gift Shop. Mill was also a member of the NAACP of Chester County, the Swinging Trees Bowling Association, and a troop leader for the Girl Scouts, as well as participated in the summer Kennett Square Fresh Air Program for children. Mill is survived by her two daughters, Earlene, wife of Kenneth T. Walls of Downingtown and Mildred “Mit”, wife of the Hon. J. Curtis Joyner of West Chester, and a godson whom she raised, Jeffrey L. Stanton husband of Lizette of Harrisburg. Known as Nanny to her nine grandchildren she leaves behind Harold J. Carter, Jr. (Karen) of Burbank, Calif., Monica Walls-Miller (Joseph) of Downingtown, Angela Carter of Philadelphia, Jennifer Joyner-Hall (David) of Washington, D.C, Nicole Joyner of Atlanta, Ga., Gary Carter of Santa Monica, Calif., Mikael Carter of Bryn Mawr, Jacqlyn Joyner of Chicago, Ill. and Katherine Carter of Philadelphia; and four great-grandchildren, Sophia and Simone Carter and Kenneth and Carl Joseph Miller. Mill was a wonderful active grandmother and played a pivitol role in shaping her grandchildren’s lives, she also assisted in the upbringing and nurturing of several other children in the community. Mill was predeceased by her son, Harold “Rocky” Carter who was married to Charlene Carter of Norristown. Mill’s deceased siblings were John C., Paul M., Earl T., Aida M., James A. Jones. She is also survived by a hosts of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 9, at St. Agnes Church, 233 W. Gay St., West Chester.
